The South African government issued a statement on Wednesday, refusing to expel Iraqi diplomats.
The statement said they would be guided by relevant decisions taken by the United Nations considering the US request to close down Iraqi diplomatic missions in Pretoria.
"South Africa's approach on this matter is premised on the principle of multi-lateralism and the provisions of the Vienna Convention," said the statement.
South Africa reaffirmed its position that all international conflicts should be resolved through multi-lateral organizations such as the UN.
Noting the continuing war in Iraq, South Africa reaffirmed its preference for the resolution of international tensions by peaceful means, the statement said.
