A British soldier was killed in action and several others were wounded Sunday in southern Iraq, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said.
"There has been further fighting in the area of Basra in which a British serviceman has been killed and several injured," the spokeswoman said.
"We can confirm a British solider has been killed today in action around Basra. That is all we can say at present," she said, without giving details.
The death on Sunday brings the number of British casualties in Iraq since the war broke out on March 20 to 24 -- five in action, 14 in accidents and five in "friendly fire" incidents.
A 45,000-strong British force, including 26,000 soldiers, are taking part in the US-led war on Iraq.
