Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov said Thursday that the United Nations should play a leading role in a program of Iraq's rebuilding after the war.
"It is too early now to speak about any conditions for the program. The situation is still uncertain," Fedotov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
"Nevertheless, Russia's position is that the UN should play a leading role in this program," he noted.
He also stressed that the UN Oil-For-Food program for Iraq should be resumed as soon as possible.
"The UN Security Council in New York is now engaged in intensive consultations on a humanitarian resolution aimed at introducing temporary technical adjustments to the way the programis being implemented," he said.
"But all these technical adjustments should not be used in any way to legitimatize the military action against Iraq," Fedotov stressed.
