Italy's civil protection department will be directly involved in a humanitarian plan for Iraq being drawn up by European Commission President Romano Prodi and Italy's representative to the European Union (EU) Ambassador Umberto Vattani.
The department said it was prepared to send to the nations bordering with Iraq a team of 500 experts, complete with logistical support, field hospitals, tents and goods and materials needed to offer humanitarian aid to the homeless and refugees, it was learned in Rome.
The EU plan, which involves similar initiatives by other member countries, calls for the Italian team to be in place in the Gulf region within a week after a formal request is made for assistance. The Italian team will include personnel from the Red Cross, volunteer organizations, the regions and state agencies and corps.
