Finnish President Tarja Halonen on Wednesday call for an early end to the Iraq war. Speaking at the inaugural session of the newly-elected Finnish parliament, Halonen said the launching of war on Iraq by the United States and its allies does not accord with international laws.
The Finnish people and people in other European countries are strongly against the war, she said.
She noted that the United Nations shoulders the main responsibilities for world peace and stability, and the United States, without a UN mandate, should not take military actions on Iraq.
Most Finnish people are opposed to the US-led assault on Iraq that started last Thursday, the country's most influential newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, quoted a nationwide opinion poll assaying on Sunday.
