Annan Asks US, Iraq to Shield Civilians, Vows to Provide Humanitarian Aid
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Thursday called upon the United States and Iraq to employ all possible means to protect civilians in military conflicts.

"I hope that all parties will scrupulously observe the requirements of international humanitarian law, and will do everything in their power to shield the civilian population from the grim consequences of war," Annan said in a statement.

The UN chief also vowed to provide essential humanitarian assistance and support for the ordinary Iraqi people.
