Number of Mountain Deer Increases in Hainan Province
Herds of mountain deer run in the Datian National Reserve in south China's Hainan Provnce July 1, 2003. The mountain deer, unique species in the tropical island, are listed under first-class national protection after they were on the verge of extinction with only 26 deer left in mid 1970s.

After the Datian Mountain Deer National Reserve was set up in 1976, its number has grown rapidly and surpassed 1,000 now.
