HK University Gets "863 Program" Fund for Pearl River Research
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has received 2 million yuan (US$257,000) from the National High-Tech R&D Program for a research project on the Pearl River, the university said Wednesday.

The research project is aimed at developing an integrated mathematical model that will predict environmental changes and issue warnings for the Pearl River mouth and its nearby waters.

Researchers will examine the changes and mechanisms of the hydrodynamic, physical, sedimentation, chemical and biological processes involved, and develop a Coastal Ocean and Atmospheric Prediction System to demonstrate the effect of sea and air interaction on the environment.

China launched the first high technology research development plan the "863 Program" in 1987, which mainly involves science and technology related to the development of the national economy and overall national strength. Major achievements have been made in the past 15 years.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has received over 100 million yuan (about US$12.8 million) in all from "863 Program" since 1997.
