Fog Causes Ship Collisions in Eastern Guangdong

Three people have died and four are missing after heavy fog caused four collisions involving eight ships in the eastern waters of Guangdong.

The collisions occurred between Jan.26 and Jan. 29, causing three ships to sink.

Light diesel oil spills were also reported.

The maritime affairs office in Shantou has taken measures to improve the monitoring of vessels during foggy weather.

Guangdong coastal areas have been shrouded in fog in recent days with visibility drastically reduced. The maritime office had limited the number of vessels on the water by reducing the number of navigation permits issued and stepping up maritime patrols.

In the meantime, shipping companies were required to be on the alert for heavy fog and strong winds.

The maritime affairs office also requires shipping masters to strictly follow safety regulations. Ferries services would be suspended during heavy fog and poor visibility.
