Forum Opens on Work of Chen Weiya

The Soul of Terracotta Warriors, Dunhuang Dreams and Turandot, all these are signature works of choreographer and dance director, Chen Weiya. On Friday, a three-day forum on Chen Weiya's work opened at the Ministry of Culture in Beijing. The gathering has brought together some of the biggest names in dance in China. Our reporter Yang Ran joined the discussion.

About 100 of China's top dancers, critics, lyricists, composers, and set and costume designers attended the opening ceremony. All of them are experts on Chen Weiya's work and style. They're looking back at the great choreographer's achievements, but they're also looking for new directions into the future.

Chen was one of the first graduates of the Beijing Dance Academy's Department of Choreography and Directing. His works have won critical acclaim, and a host of national awards. His creations in dance, drama, opera, and in the national and international cultural and sporting arenas have drawn wide praise.

Choreographer & Director Chen Weiya said, "Each artist has his successes and failures. As for me, now I'm not only working on stage, but also on large-scale dramas, operas, evening galas and open-air performances. However, I feel I need new inspiration. This is why we have come together here."

However, the forum won't be limited to just a discussion of Chen's work. On Sunday night, fans can see a collection of his works at the Beijing Poly Theatre.
