Demand Rises for College Teachers in Guangdong

Graduates with master’s degrees or doctorates are being recruited in large numbers by colleges in Guangdong.

About 150 Guangdong universities, colleges and institutes are searching for talents at a job fair, which opened Sunday in Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies plans to recruit more than 100 new teachers as it seeks to expand.

The demand for new teachers is a result of the expansion of enrolments in Guangdong colleges this year. There are now more than 600,000 students studying in ordinary colleges in Guangdong, up from 467,800 students last year.

The pace of college expansions will not slow down in the next two to three years, officials say. The number of college students in the province will reach 800,000 in 2005.

According to a projection by education officials, about 5,000 new teachers will be needed for higher learning institutions in Guangdong each year from 2003 to 2005.
