First Tibetan-Chinese-English Electronic Dictionary Developed

The first Tibetan-Chinese-English electronic dictionary was recently developed by Qinghai Normal University and approved by experts.

The dictionary, published on CD, has three platforms that provide word consultation and translation between Tibetan, Chinese and English. It also provides users with math, physics, chemistry and computer sub-dictionaries, according to Cai Rangjia, head of the university's information processing center.

The dictionary has so far collected 180,000 words in Chinese, Tibetan and English, all of which had been approved by the national review committee on Tibetan textbooks and were very authoritative, said Cai.

Meanwhile, a program for inputting Tibetan phrases in computers was also developed by the university. These programs marked the progress of the popularization of the Tibetans language and further communications between the Tibetan people and the outside world, said Li Yanfu, professor of the university who was in charge of the dictionary program.
