Construction of the Xiamen Polytechnic Institute has been launched on the island of Xiamen in Fujian Province, east China, local officials said Monday.
Located within Lujiang Vocational University, the institute will enroll its first group of 350 students later this year.
According to the plan for the institute, there will be 4,000 students by 2005, 6,000 by 2007, and up to 10,000, eventually.
The institute will offer courses in English, electronic commerce, information management and technology, computer science, machinery design, manufacturing and automation.
During the period from 2004 to 2007, the institute will also offer training in marketing, business administration, telecommunications, engineering and industrial design.
The institute plans to invest 640 million yuan (US$77 million) in the construction project before 2007.
