Jiumenkou Great Wall, the only section of China's mighty wall built over water, has been carefully restored in northeast Liaoning Province.
To restore the Jiumenkou section, China for the first time madeuse of loans from the World Bank available for the repair of cultural relics.
From 1998 to 2000, the northern part of the section was repaired at the cost of US$200,000. The project included rebuilding water gates, battlements and the wall body.
Previously, the Jiumenkou Great Wall underwent a large-scale reparation from 1986 to 1989 at a cost of 5.7 million yuan (US$686,746).
About 100 meters of the 1,704-meter-long section was built over the Jiujiang River.
Meanwhile, the local government continuously maintains the surroundings by enlarging green areas, eliminating outdated brickyards and issuing local statutes on the management of the wall.
Jiumenkou Great Wall, located in Suizhong County in west Liaoning, was built around 479 AD -- 502 AD and enlarged in 1,381 AD.
