New Version of Kunqu Opera Peach Blossom Fan

The production of a new version of classic Kunqu Opera Peach Blossom Fan recently started production in Nanjing, in the Jiangsu Province.

Famous poet Yu Guangzhong will be the literary consultant to this play, and some foreigners will also take part in producing this new version. The total investment will be more than 6 million yuan.

"Peach Blossom Fan" was written in 1699 by Kong Shanren and set between 1643 and 1645. It outlines the history of the downfall of Emperor Zhu Yousong of the Ming Dynasty in South China.

The principal characters are Hou Chaozong and Li Xiangjun. Hou was a man of letters and Li an educated and famous prostitute. The separation and reunion of the lovers allowed the author to dwell on emotions associated with the rise and fall of a dynasty.
