One Family, Two Mothers
Sitting between her two mothers and listening to "Happy Birthday," Yuan Guangyu looks a picture of happiness as she celebrates her fifth birthday in Nanning, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Once an orphan with the Nanning Social Welfare House, Yuan now has two mothers, one from China and the other from the United States who both adore and care for her.

Feng Weijuan (right), her Chinese mother, volunteered to financially support Yuan after hearing her plight in 1998.

Yuan was later legally adopted by a Chinese-American Li Meizhen, a medical doctor at the University of California, in August 1999.

Although Yuan moved to America, the two mothers kept close contact with each other.

At the end of February, Li came to Nanning to complete the adoption procedures of her second daughter, and brought Yuan with her for a reunion with her Chinese mother who decided to hold the special birthday party.
