The 12th National Congress of the China Zhi Gong (Public Interest) Party, one of the country's eight non-Communist parties, concluded in Beijing Saturday, with Luo Haocai re-elected chairman of the party's new central committee.
Luo, 68, a renowned professor of law at the prestigious Beijing University, had served as vice-president of the China Law Society and vice-president of China's Supreme People's Court in the 1980s and 1990s.
A native of east China's Fujian province, Luo joined the China Zhi Gong Party in 1992 and was elected chairman of the 11th Central Committee of the party in 1997.
Luo was also elected vice-chairman of the ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in 1998.
During the five-day congress, delegates studied the guidelines of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), held last month in Beijing, adopted a report by the 11th Zhi Gong Party Central Committee and passed an amendment to the party’s constitution.
The newly-elected 12th Central Committee consists of 99 members. The committee elected a chairman, seven vice-chairmen and 29 executive members at its first plenary session Saturday.
Founded in October 1925, in San Francisco, in the United States, the China Zhi Gong Party mainly represents returned overseas Chinese, relatives of overseas Chinese and scholars and celebrities with overseas connections.
