A source with Beijing Xuanwu Hospital confirmed yesterday that Tanya Liu Hai-juo, an anchor with Phoenix TV who was seriously injured in the May 10 British railway accident, would be transferred to the hospital for further treatment. The source, who refused to be identified, said yesterday in a phone interview that the hospital will go all out to help her recover as soon as possible.
Liu, together with two other Taiwan women journalists, took a train which derailed on May 10 in Britain. The other two were killed by the accident. While Liu fortunately survived, she was seriously injured and in a deep coma. She has had four operations since, but remains in a dangerous situation.
A few days after the accident, Ling Feng, an expert in the field of neuro-surgery with Beijing Xuanwu Hospital, flew to London and cooperated with local doctors on diagnosis and therapy.
According to China News Service, Ling gave Liu a general physical checkup and lowered her body temperature from 40 C to 37.5 C.
Also under Ling's suggestion, doctors performed an operation to enable Liu to breath better and avoid lung infection.
So far, it was reported that Liu can breath by herself, and an examination on May 29 showed that her chest and abdominal cavity are normal.
To get the best care for Liu and for the sake of continuity of treatment, Liu's family reportedly wants to send her to Beijing Xuanwu Hospital.
The hospital has rich experience in neuro-surgery, and the chairman of Phoenix TV and Liu's brother were both satisfied with its medical facilities after visits. If everything goes smoothly, Liu will hopefully be transferred to the hospital in a week.
International SOS will be responsible for flying her back to Beijing.
