College Girls Pledge Independence

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the third day of the third month (April 11th on the Gregorian calendar) is Girl's Day. Female students on the Women's Faculty of Culture at Shanghai Normal University will enjoy the festival with a host of activities this year. Singing, boating and performances will be held to mark the occasion.

They also plan to organize a large sign-up campaign with the theme "I am female," calling on modern women to hold their own views and to refuse to place themselves in inferior positions of dependency by relying on wealthy men.

Weng Minhua, vice dean of the faculty, pointed out that the aim of the sign-up campaign was to advocate right thinking about gender amongst young women.

According to Weng, women should not be vases on display, but compete within the man's world on an equal level. The sign-up is also open to men who support this view. Weng said there young men had already expressed their desire to attend the sign-up activity.
