The Lantern Festival is held on the fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year and it is customary for the Chinese to display lanterns for protection and blessings on this day. Although the tradition of making one's own lanterns and walking along streets are no longer practiced, breathtakingly scenic Yuyuan holds an annual lantern festival worth a visit. Admire the brilliance of lanterns in all shapes and sizes whilst strolling through this charming traditional Chinese garden. The festive delicacy of tangyuan, or yuanxiao (glutinous rice dumplings), can be found in shops here too.
This year, a 4.5-meter tall King Mouse lantern will be built and displayed in the center of the garden to usher in the Year of the Mouse, along with other smaller lanterns. The lantern festival will be bigger than in previous years with lanterns adorning neighboring streets of Lishui road, Fuyou road and Old Shanghai Street too.
