An anti-HIV/AIDS research program sponsored by the United States health authorities was launched last week in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, northwest China.
A total of 500 intravenous drug addicts who are not HIV carriers will be chosen to take part in the trial, by taking a certain medicine as a preventive measure, according to sources with the local public health department.
The program involves an investment of US$1 million and equipment worth US$400,000 for the first year.
The program is also carried out in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, south China.
