Yantai Wins UN Habitat Award

Yantai in east China's Shandong Province received a 2005 UN Habitat Award for its great achievements in transforming its old city on October 3, according to a People's Daily report on October 9.

This year, six programs of the world were awarded habitat awards, and Yantai was the only city in China winning the prize. Following the Best Practice in Human Settlements of China in 2003 and China residence award in 2004, Yantai has won another award in UN habitat area.

Yantai was ranked the second place among more than 100 application cities in the world. During the past three years, Yantai has made comprehensive transformation of five street neighborhood committees and 39 communities in the old city proper, covering a total area of 25 square kilometers. As a result, 111,000 households and 314,200 people have benefited from the program.
