The Chinese national flag was displayed in outer space by Lt. Col. Yang Liwei who was orbiting the Earth piloting Shenzhen V, China's first manned spaceship.
The astronaut also showed a United Nations flag to highlight China's persistent stand for peaceful exploration and exploitation of space, according to sources with the Beijing Aerospace Command and Control Center.
