At least 1,037 people were killedby the heat wave that swept across Andhra Pradesh in south India in the last fortnight, state Relief Commissioner Rosaiah said Wednesday night.
He said that as per information collated from district authorities, the death toll has been put at 1,037 with coastal district of East Godavari bearing the brunt accounting for 172 deaths.
Prakasam district reported 166 deaths followed by West Godavari147, Krishna 131, Guntur 98, Visakhapatnam 89, Khammam 67, Warangal 47, Nalgonda 22, Adilabad, Nellore and Srikakulam 15 each,Mahaboobnagar 14, Karimnagar 12, Vizianagaram 8, Cuddapah 5 and Chittoor 3.
This was probably the highest death toll attributed to heat wave in the state, he said. There have been no fresh reports of deaths in the last two days, the Commissioner said.
Sunstroke-related deaths were reported from Kurnool, Nizamabad and Medak districts as several parts of the state, particularly the coastal region, are in the grip of scorching heat since the beginning of this month, according to the Press Trust of India.
