U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative to Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in Pakistan for talks with senior Pakistani officials as part of ongoing efforts to find a solution to the Afghan crisis, a U.N. spokesman said Monday.
Brahimi met there with Pakistani Foreign Secretary Inam-ul Haque and had a working lunch with Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar, spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York.
The spokesman quoted Brahimi as saying that "if a way can be found to liberate and empower the people of Afghanistan, this is something the international community can eventually be proud of."
Brahimi is scheduled to meet on Tuesday with a broad range of Afghans, from political players to civil society representatives, he said.
