US Warplanes Renew Air Raids on Kabul, Kandahar

US warplanes launched renewed air raids early Monday on the Afghan capital of Kabul and the southern city of Kandahar, which is known as the Taliban stronghold, the Cable News Network (CNN) reported.

The CNN quoted witnesses as saying that several US warplanes dropped bombs which hit Taliban military installations in Kandahar.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the commander-in-chief of the US Central Command, General Tommy Franks, arrived in Pakistan Monday for talks with President Pervez Musharraf on the war in Afghanistan.

Pakistani military sources, who did not want to be named, said the general overseeing the US operations against the Taliban and the al-Qaeda alleged terrorist network in Afghanistan was due to stay for only a few hours.

Franks is the top theatre commander for the current US campaign against Afghanistan's Taliban regime.

Also, a delegation from the Northern Alliance will represent Afghanistan's exiled opposition government at a meeting of Afghan opposition leaders in Ankara.

The team was expected to be led by Mukhammad Konuni, a member of the Northern Alliance's military and political council.
