German Chancellor Meets Chinese Vice Premier

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder met with visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wu Bangguo Tuesday in Berlin.

Wu said Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji is looking forward to Schroeder's upcoming visit to China in October.

Wu pointed out that since Zhu's visit to Germany last July, bilateral relations, especially economic and trade cooperation, have maintained strong momentum, with last year's bilateral trade reaching nearly 20 billion U.S. dollars and German investment in China amounting to 6 billion U.S. dollars.

Wu said his own visit is aimed at promoting mutual cooperation in all fields, especially in the field of economic and technological cooperation.

China highly appreciates the recent decision of the German government not to sell submarines to Taiwan, Wu said, adding that this move proves Germany is a trustworthy partner of China.

Schroeder said that the German government and the business community highly value Wu's visit, hoping that it will add impetus to bilateral relations, especially in the field of economic and trade cooperation.

Schroeder said that in a turbulent world today, Germany attaches great importance to developing a stable political and economic relationship with China and will as always adhere to its One-China policy.
