Shanghai Has 2,000 Postdoctoral Researchers
As one of the first cities to apply the postdoctoral research system in China, this east China metropolis has become an attractive place for leading scientists from both at home and abroad.

Since 1993, the city has trained a total of over 2,000 postdoctoral researchers, who are now working in a variety of academic fields.

Currently, there are 132 postdoctoral study centers run by local institutions and enterprises, with 930 researchers. By 2005,the figure is expected to reach 1,500.

Among those working at the postdoctoral centers, 74 percent arefrom other parts of the country, and 16 percent are people who have studied abroad. Nine of the postdoctoral researchers are foreign nationals.

Sixty-five percent of these postdoctoral researchers have decided to stay on in Shanghai after they finish their research work.

Many of these postdoctoral researchers are involved in the country's key research programs, and some have won national awardsfor their academic achievements.
