Beijing to Begin Manufacturing Cars
A joint venture between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) will soon be set up in Shunyi, Beijing, to manufacture cars and light-duty trucks, the Beijing Morning Post reported Friday.

According to the Beijing-based newspaper, Beijing Automobile Industry Holdings Co. recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd of ROK for the establishment of the new joint venture.

In accordance with the MOU, both partners will share the cost of the new joint venture equally, with Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. having promised to contribute US$250 million.

New cars and trucks manufactured by the joint venture will hit the market around October this year. By the year of 2005, the joint venture will have an annual output of 200,000 automobiles, including 100,000 cars, said the newspaper.

Statistics show that although Beijing is one of China's leading automobile trading centers, with annual car sales accounting for one seventh of the national total, the Chinese national capital has not yet manufactured any cars.
