Hong Kong Drivers to Get Test-free Guangdong Licenses

Hong Kong drivers will be able to obtain mainland driving licenses without a test starting Jan. 1, 2004.

Mainland license holders can already obtain Hong Kong driving licenses without a test, Chinese-language media said Monday.

License holders of Group One (private cars) and Two (mini vans) in Hong Kong can apply for Group C driving licenses issued by the Guangdong government without a test, valid throughout the mainland.

Group C refers to cars less than six meters in length, loading capacity of less than 4.5 tons and less than 19 seats.

Electronic bicycle and motor tricycle drivers in Hong Kong can also obtain relevant licenses in Guangdong.

Hong Kong drivers should apply to vehicle management departments in Guangdong in person with required documentation including an application form, ID card, residence permit, Hong Kong driving license and submit to a physical examination by a Guangdong hospital above county-level.

As traffic rules in Guangdong and Hong Kong are not the same, drivers are advised to learn road rules before applying.

For details, Guangdong drivers can check www.info.gov.hk/td in Hong Kong and Hong Kong residents can check www.gdgajj.com in Guangdong.
