Farmer Seeks Jailing to Avoid Debtors
A farmer from north China's Hebei Province was sentenced to eight year prison for burglary after he admitted committing the crimes in order to go to jail and avoid his debtors.

The farmer, identified as Shi, lived in Leting County and lost money in a shrimp-cultivating business. He decided to commit robberies to receive a prison sentence to avoid paying his debts.

Shi went to neighboring Luannan County and robbed a 50-year-oldwoman of 15 yuan (US$1.8) at her home and then broke in to her neighbor's home. The woman reported him and police rushed to the scene and caught Shi.

The farmer was later tried at the People's Court of Luannan County. Besides the jail term, he was also fined 5,000 yuan (US$602).
