Market Blast Kills Five in Xi'an
Five people were killed and nine injured when an explosion ripped through a non-staple food market in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province July 14, 2003.

According to witnesses, the blast, which broke out at about 11:30 am on Tanshi Street in the city center, produced a huge noise and glass fragments were scattered on the ground.

Local police have blocked off the site, enforcing martial law in the neighborhood. The injured have been sent to hospitals.

The city has set up a special team to find the cause of the accident.
