Two ringleaders of a gang of robbers who stole more than 200,000 yuan (US$24,180) from McDonald's and KFC in Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province, have received lengthy jail sentences.
Huang Rican and accomplice Chen Renchang targeted six branches of the famous fast food chains between November 2001 and March last year.
They broke into the restaurants using pliers in the early hours of the morning and bound the hands of the staff with tape. They then smashed open the safes before making off with the cash, police said.
A district court in Wuhan heard last month that Huang and Chen were leaders of a gang that included six other robbers.
Huang was described as the primary offender and was jailed for 20 years. He was also deprived of his political rights for five years and fined 20,000 yuan (US$2,418) by the court.
Chen was jailed for 16 years, deprived of political rights for one year and fined 17,000 yuan (US$2,056).
Another member of the gang, Xu Guoyong, was jailed for 10 years and fined 11,000 yuan (US$1,330). The other five criminals are still at large.
No decision on an appeal to a higher court has been made by the convicted criminals.
