Private enterprises have replaced foreign-funded companies as the number one employer in China's biggest industrial and commercial center in 2002, according to the latest report from Shanghai's labor and social security department.
The report shows the private sector doubled its employment in 2002, accounting for more than 28 percent of the jobs provided, while employment by foreign-funded companies dropped and the public sector began to recover its demand for labor.
The labor demand and supply in Shanghai last year increased by 36.9 percent and 51 percent respectively from 2001 with more than 480,000 out of 570,000 job seekers being employed, according to the report.
The report said the manufacturing industry's demand for labor reached 266,000 last year, accounting for more than 55 percent of the total.
However, Shanghai still needs a great number of skilled workers. The demand for such workers grew 50 percent annually, according to the report.
