The former general manager of the Shenyang Passenger Traffic Group in northeast China's Liaoning Province, Xia Renfan, was sentenced to death Monday for corruption and embezzlement of millions of yuan with which he built a private manor.
According to the sentence imposed by the Shenyang City Intermediate People's Court, Xia was deprived of his political rights for life and all his private property confiscated.
Xia was found guilty of corruption involving 8.18 million yuan (US$986,600), embezzling 18.37 million yuan (US$2.2 million), taking 668,000 yuan (US$80,480) in bribes and offering bribes of 388,000 yuan (US$46,700), when he served as general manager of the Shenyang Passenger Traffic Group for several years from 1997.
With embezzled funds, Xia built a private manor covering 66 hectares and ordered his staff to lavishly decorate the house in the name of building a publicly owned townhouse.
