China to Speed Up Harnessing of Yangtze River
China should accelerate the harnessing of the Yangtze River and promote unified water resources management to ensure sustainable social and economic development along the river, experts said at a seminar which closed in Beijing Thursday.

It was the first high level seminar in China on harnessing the Yangtze River, the longest river in the country, and was attended by more than 180 academic experts and officials from both the central government and local governments along the river.

They discussed such issues as how to control flooding and use river water more reasonably.

Diverting water from the Yangtze River to north China, the Three Gorges Project, and water resources protection were the main topics at the seminar.

How to develop the economies along the river in a sustainable way was another hot topic.

Seventy papers were read and more than 40 speeches were delivered at the seminar.
