Approved by the National Postdoctoral Administrative Committee, the Taiwan Province-invested Delta-CIMIC Electric & Electronics (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. set up its postdoctoral research center in the city yesterday, becoming the first Taiwan-funded company to set up such a unit on Chinese mainland.
"By establishing the post-doctoral center, we aim to provide a cooperation plat-form for enterprises and universities to push forward the transition from new technology to productivity," said Bruce Cheng, board chairman of a major investor in the company, Delta Electronics Inc., which is the world's largest power supplier.
Led by Dr. Fred C. Lee, a noted electronics professor, the center will engage in research of electric power and electronics, like developing energy-saving and environment-friendly products.
"Doctorate students can find financial support from the center and the enterprise will benefit from the research results of these talented people," said Wang Yue, a spokesman for the Shanghai Taiwan Affairs Office. "We hope more Taiwan-based companies will open such centers."
There are some 50,000 Taiwan-invested firms on the Chinese mainland.
Statistics show Shanghai now has 102 postdoctoral centers in research institutes and 41 in companies.
"The postdoctoral centers help attract a lot of talents to Shanghai," said Wang Shaochang, Shanghai Personnel Bureau deputy director.
