From next year, undergraduates will be allowed to get married when they reach the required age for marriage, according to the Shanghai Educational Committee.
According to the committee, the regulations for university students are being revised now and the new regulation will lift the ban on university students getting married.
In April last year the abolition of age and marriage restrictions on college entrance examination takers was suggested in news releases.
"I definitely won't get married at university as undergraduates are not ready economically and psychologically and so cannot meet the requirements for marriage, said an undergraduate from the Fudan University, surnamed Zhang.
"It is growing more competitive in the city's job market and we are busy hunting for jobs in the last semester, so it is impossible for us to get married," Zhang said.
According to Chinese marriage law, women of at least 20 years old and men of at least 22 years old are allowed to get married, that is to say, most male undergraduates can get married no earlier than senior semester after the new regulation takes effect, said an analyst.
