Participants at Beijing Plus Ten, marking the tenth anniversary of the 4th World Conference on Women, enjoyed a blue sky and fresh cool breeze when they visited Huairou District in the north of Beijing on September 1 to relive the historic event.
"I believe you delegates' experience in Beijing has become a piece of inerasable memory in the deep place of your hearts,"said Qiang Wei, deputy secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, "You are friends of Beijing forever, and I expect to see you again in 2008 when the Olympic Games are held in the city."
Khunying Supatra Masdit, convener of the '95 NGO Forum on Women, also addressed the delegates: "Today, we are here in Huairou again after ten years. It presents us a wonderful opportunity to refresh the '95 NGO Forum."
"Let's unite and push on to go canvassing in government and the UN for our common goals," she said.
Prime Minister of Mozambique Luisa Dias Diogo, Vice Speaker of the Senate of Poland Jolanta Danielak, Deputy Prime Minster of Uzbekistan Svetlana Inamova, and UN Assistant Secretary General Rachel Manyanja were present, as was Gu Xiulian, vice chairwomen of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and president of the All-China Women's Federation.
In September 1995, the '95 NGO Forum of the UN 4th World Conference on Women was held in Huairou, and a memorial park has since been established there.
The 668,000-square meter park is an expansion of the friendship woods planted by the original event's participants from all over the world.
There is a 900-square meter exhibition room that focuses on women's culture and world conferences, a 98-meter-long wall relief portraying women's advancement in different parts of the world, and four tablets with inscriptions on four countries that have hosted the conference.
Delegates also visited the '95 NGO Forum Convention Center and the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall in Huairou on the same day.
