Sixty high school students were sent to hospital Thursday morning, hit by a suspected food poisoning from sandwiches sold at a school grocery.
None of the 60 students, who are all from Nantou Middle School, were in a critical condition.
Health authorities said the grocery did not meet the hygiene standard for selling cakes and breads.
The sandwich producer, Zhufu Bakery, had no processing rooms to clean eggs, sterilize tools or make sandwiches. It could not produce clean inspection certificates. The factory was close.
The Nanshan Hospital received five students that appeared to be sickened by unhealthy foods at 1:30 AM Thursday.
These students showed symptoms including nausea, stomachache, dizziness, fever and diarrhea.
Another 55 students with similar symptoms came to the hospital later.
Most of the poisoned students said they did not notice where the sandwiches were made. "We often had the sandwich and it was always OK," said a second grader girl surnamed Li.
