Two Australians used fake US dollar notes to open a business account in the headquarters of HSBC Hong Kong in Central District and were arrested by the police Wednesday, confirmed the HSBC Thursday. The police said the suspects used two fake notes with the face value of US$100 and US$ 1,000 respectively to open an account in HSBC headquarters around 1 p.m. Wednesday. The man of 68 years old and the woman in her 50's had 89 notes with face value of US$100 and 5 notes with face value of US$1,000. The police believed some of the notes are fake. HSBC told Xinhua that they are always careful about foreign currency business and checked the notes several times before they call the police.
An expert on foreign currency said the note with face value of US$1,000 was issued during the Second World War and very rare in Asia, even in the United States.
