Bus Accident Kills 1, Injures 12

A bus carrying 11 Taiwanese travelers overturned Tuesday morning in northeast China's Jilin Province, killing one woman and injuring 12 others.

The bus, on its way back to Shenyang of Liaoning Province from the northern slope of the Changbaishan tourism area, rolled off a bend in the road and overturned at about 8:45 AM, Xinhua reported Tuesday.

The 12 injured, including the 10 Taiwanese, a tour guide and a driver, were rushed to the No 2 People's Hospital of Antu County.

Three Taiwanese passengers most severely wounded suffered injuries to lower back, neck and thigh respectively, said Wei Jiuping, director of Taiwan Affairs Office of Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture in a Xinhua report.

At 4 PM, some of the injured were still undergoing surgical operations. The driver still remained unconscious.

The hospital organized more than 40 doctors for the rescue, some of whom responded from a neighboring city when the local government requested support.

The woman, who died on the scene of the accident, has been identified as Wang Shuzhen, 70. She was reportedly traveling in the mainland with two relatives.

Just two days before the accident, another serious traffic accident occurred Sunday in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region killing seven and injuring 17 .

A truck was carrying lumber and 24 passengers from Baxoi County in Qamdo Prefecture to Lhasa, capital of the autonomous region, when it turned over and fell off a rugged mountainous road.

It overturned on the No. 318 State Highway in Nyingchi Prefecture. Initial investigation shows speeding and failure to properly handle the emergency caused the tragedy.
