The scenic city of Suzhou in east China has become the biggest laptop computer production center in the world with an annual output close to 10 million units, about aquarter of the world's total.
The top nine computer companies in Taiwan have set up factories in Suzhou, including Uniwell Compute Corp., Acer Inc. and Mitac International Corp.
Uniwell's overall production capacity in Suzhou, about 100 km from Shanghai in the east, is close to 1 million units per year thanks to the recent operation of a new workshop in the Suzhou Industrial Park.
The company said its annual capacity will be raised to 5 million units after all its factory buildings and production linesin Suzhou become operational.
Samsung Electronics Co. of the Republic of Korea also plans to locate its notebook computer production line in Suzhou, with a target output of half a million units a year.
The information industry has become the No. 1 industrial sectorof the city, where investment from some 700 Taiwanese firms accounts for 40 percent of the industry's total. (Xinhua News Agency August 5, 2003)
