As foreign telecoms players make plans to establish themselves in China, domestic heavyweight China Telecom is working to establish itself overseas, starting with the US market.
Such was reported on Friday as a commentary by the official daily newspaper of ITU Telecom Asia 2002 conference being held in Hong Kong.
The commentary entitled "China Telecom connects across the pacific" said China Telecom's US subsidiary, China Telecom USA, made its stateside debut in early November with the launch of ChinaDirect, a managed telecoms services suite offering end-to-end telecoms services to American corporations doing business in China.
ChinaDirect includes International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC) services from the United States to all points in China, direct Internet Protocol (IP) connections to China, and a secure Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based Virtual Private Networks (VPN) service for US companies with China-based operations.
Customers can be billed in the United States or China.
China Telecom USA President Zhang Weihua said China Telecom has an edge in connecting US companies to the Chinese mainland because it has the focus and the connectivity to include points of presence in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C., and the China-US trans-pacific undersea fiber cable.
"Creating seamless communications links between American headquarters and Chinese subsidiaries is China Telecom USA's only focus, so you can bet we're going to work tirelessly to be good at it," Zhang said.
