China made great achievements in economic development last year despite the complicated and changing international situation and it is necessary to continue solid work to maintain the good growth momentum this year, Premier Zhu Rongji said Tuesday.
Although the new situation brought about by the global economic slowdown and China's WTO membership presents quite a few new challenges, he said, there are also many opportunities and favorable conditions for development.
The premier made the remarks during a joint group discussion with members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from the economic and agricultural circles, who are here attending the on-going annual session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee.
"So long as we implement the policies and arrangements by the CPC central committee, buttress our confidence and do solid work, we can certainly maintain the good momentum of growth and win new victories in reform, opening up and modernization," the Premier said.
He thanked CPPCC members for the good proposals and suggestions they have put forward, saying that the State Council and departments concerned will take them seriously and improve their work accordingly.
