The Taoxian International Airport in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province will be expanded into the largest airport of northeast China.
The expansion project, at a total cost of 1.07 billion yuan, started in April 1999 and will be completed in October this year.
Once finished, the airport will be able to handle 6 million passengers a year and by 2010, through further expansion as planned, it will be able to handle 10 million passengers annually.
As the passenger flow has increased by 16 percent to 25 percent annually in recent years, the old airport, capable of handling merely 900,000 passengers a year, has found it increasingly difficult to satisfy the market demand.
