China Mobile's Capital Budget to Reach US$7.8b This Year

China Mobile recently released its 2004 annual report, showing net profit increasing to 42 billion yuan (US billion), up 18% from 2003. Wang Jianzhou, president of China Mobile, pointed out that the company's capital budget, excluding the development of 3G (third-generation technology), would reach 7.8 billion US dollar in 2005, 47% higher than the previous year.

Wang said the core technologies of 3G and its related industrial development have matured and China Mobile would face great challenges and opportunities due to the possible changes in the industry as a result of China's imminent issuance of 3G licenses. The company would make full use of its advantages on existing technologies, network and resources to actively prepare for the construction and development of its 3G network. It is commonly expected that Chinese authorities will soon issue licenses for 3G operations by the end of this year.
