China's Top Legislators Examine Four Draft Laws

China's top legislators gathered in Beijing Sunday to deliberate the draft laws on property right, notarial services and penalties for offenses against public order, along with a draft amendment to the law to protect women's rights.

According to the agenda of the six-day 16th session of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, which opened Sunday, the legislators also will examine reports of the State Council on the final results of the 2004 central budget and on the auditing of the implementation of the budget and other financial revenue and expenditure.

The draft amendment to China's Law on Women's Right Protection, with provisions to prevent and control sexual harassment, was submitted to the nation's top legislature on Sunday for first deliberation.

According to the draft amendment, no one shall be allowed to subject women to sexual harassment and all work units shall take measures against sexual harassment in working places.

Gender equality as part of the country's national policy is also expected to be enshrined in the law for the first time.

They will also examine the treaties on judicial assistance between China and Brazil and between China and Latvia, as well as the extradition treaty between China and the Philippines, submitted by the State Council, or the cabinet.

Also to be tabled for deliberation are a State Council report on food and drug safety and supervision, and a report of the NPC Standing Committee on the implementation of the law on water pollution prevention and control.
