Red Cross Members Meet in Beijing

President Hu Jintao met with representatives of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) on Wednesday, the opening day of the organization's eighth national conference.

"All social strata of China are working to build a prosperous society and to accelerate the pace of socialist modernization. The RCSC can make a strong contribution to this historical process," said Hu.

On behalf of the central government and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Hu extended warm congratulations on the opening of the conference.

"This year is also the centennial anniversary of the establishment of the RCSC, which has done a tremendous amount of work that favors both China and the Chinese people. Let me express my sincere greetings to all members," he said.

Hu said that the International Red Cross plays an important role in upholding humanitarianism, safeguarding lives and health and promoting world peace.

"I hope you further enhance the sense of honor and responsibility, love and care of society and human lives. Make your own contribution to building a prosperous society in China and promoting the peace and advancement of humankind."

Hu stated that local governments should actively assist the RCSC to overcome any problems it faces and help it to play its role fully in the community.

Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice President Zeng Qinghong and other senior officials also attended the meeting.
