Animal lovers in Beijing were out in force on Sunday for the Pet Culture Expo in Guodu Park. The five-day event features all kinds of games, performances and contests, with dogs, cats and others starring in the leading role.
A unique beauty contest during the expo attracted some of the world's most famous breeds, who were all vying for the title of World Champion.
It is the third time Beijing has hosted the expo, which gives the city's pet lovers and owners a chance to get together. It is also a special occasion for pets, because they had been dressed up to celebrate the holiday in their own special way.
Bao Bao used to be an orphan. But he found a new owner and life took a turn for the better.
A pet owner said, "Nobody should ever abandon their pets. I raised Bao Bao from when he was a baby, and I really love him."
Pets are becoming more and more common in China. And, they're becoming a real part of the family.
Another pet owner said, "Our pets bring us a lot of joy. We should all cherish them."
Members of the Beijing Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are attending the exposition. They are hoping to find new owners for these homeless kittens.
It's been said that a country's level of compassion can be judged by how it treats animals. Here in China, people are attempting to create a more humane environment not only for their pets, but for all animals. Those efforts are starting to pay off, as China becomes increasingly animal friendly.
